Do Not rely on the
following pool safety devices to protect your kids! Safe
Kids Worldwide recommends that you only use them in
conjunction with pool fencing that incorporates a self closing
& self latching gate!!
NETS AND POOL COVERS
Although most of the newer covers and nets are designed to
hold a persons weight, thus preventing someone from falling
into the pool and drowning. These products work great when
they are installed and properly in place. The potential for
danger comes in when the cover or net is not re-installed
after the pool is used. If the cover or net is left off, even
for a short time, it is not doing any good.
POOL ALARMS There are a few types of pool
alarms, but the only ones that should be used are those set
off by water displacement. If an object of a certain weight
(usually around 15 lbs) falls in the pool, the water
displacement of that object will set off the alarm. Again,
this safety measure works fairly well if it is turned on. The
potential for danger comes in when you forget to turn the
alarm back on after using the pool.
DOOR ALARMS There are, again, many
different types of alarms that can be put on doors leading out
into the pool area. If used, make sure the alarm meets
building codes for pools, some dont. This is a good tool for
alerting a parent that a child has wondered outside. The
potential for danger comes if you or an older child leaves a
door open, and of course the alarm does no good at all if
everyone is already outside.
DOOR LOCKS Another option for doors leading
to the pool area might be an added lock. These types of locks
are only recommended for doors that are hardly used. You can
install an additional lock at the top of the door, out of
reach of children. Make sure it is key lockable, and also be
sure to hide the key where children cannot get to it.
FENCING There are also several types of
fencing available. Wrought Iron, and Removable Mesh would be
the most popular. There is nothing wrong with an iron fence,
as long as it has a self closing and self latching gate that
is also key lockable. The only two drawbacks to iron are that
they are more expensive, and they are permanent. The removable mesh
pool fencing is less expansive, and can be taken down for parties,
or when the children are all older.
I
consider myself a frugal shopper, so I got three different estimates for our
pool fence. Of the three people we met with, I was most impressed
with Crumb Crunchers as Jeff was the only one who came up with a creative
solution to address the hill in our backyard. He also provided us with
the lowest estimate of the three . . .
